How Tongue Scraping Changes Everything

In Health & Fitness by Jackie Cruz

My morning routine consists of waking up around 8:00 am, using my Daysy non-hormonal prevention monitor, scraping my tongue and enjoying 2 green drinks. Skerrt – tongue scraping? Yes, tongue scraping!

Ever since I bought that $2 green and white tongue scraper at Walgreens, I feel refreshed in the morning, ready to drink and absorb my vitamin drinks and comfortable to give a good morning kiss to my boyfriend.

Not only is my breath “acceptably” kissable after, but also my tongue is ready to absorb all the nutrients in my Amazing Grass Raw Reserve and Nutiva Hemp Protein juice drink, as well as the Great Lakes Collagen powder mixed into my Numi Organic Jasmine Green tea. Without a clean tongue, a minimal amount of these essential vitamins would be absorbed and my money would also go to waste.

Why does tongue cleaning change everything? The clearer and cleaner your tongue is, the more vitamins can be absorbed. Those nutrients go into your body, your bloodstream and your organs. In my Amazing Grass Raw Reserve and Nutiva Hemp Protein drink, I should receive the following amounts of vitamins, as well as 19 grams of protein and an 8,000 mg bomb of greens, herbs, fibers and probiotics! These particular powders give me more kick than a cup of coffee, so I make sure every morning that I am ready to receive those essentials.

Here are some reasons why I partake in tongue scraping:

  • Get rid of a little bad breath when I first wake up
  • Prevent toxins already on my tongue from being reabsorbed into my body
  • Unblock my taste buds and prepare my tongue to absorb my vitamin/green drinks
  • Boost immune function

  • Tongue scraping is an Ayurvedic self-care tradition that “removes bacteria, food debris, fungi, toxins, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue.” How do they build-up? While sleeping our inner systems remove toxins. Those toxins settle on the tongue’s surface and when not removed, “they get reabsorbed by the body and can lead to respiratory difficulties, digestive problems, and a compromised immune system.”

Ayurveda (idea of health and wellness based on a connection between the mind, body and spirit) is the oldest natural healing system. Ayur is life and veda is science in Hindi. In this perspective, the tongue “is the mirror to all the organs of the body,” therefore, an accumulation on the tongue represents an accumulation of toxins. Through awareness of the build-up, you are more enlightened and can actively choose better food choices.

In terms of food intake, Sheila Patel (Medical Director from Chopra.com) states that tongue scraping removes build-up, which results in improved taste receptors. She explained this perfectly here:

“By increasing your taste reception, not only do you eat less, you also eliminate the need to add more sugar, salt, or excessive spice to the food to make it more flavorful. Many of the beneficial phytonutrients and ‘body signals’ that your food contains are first interpreted by the mind-body upon contact with receptors on the tongue. You want to improve this communication between your food and your body by removing any coating that is interfering with that connection. Also, many herbs have their beneficial effects from the initial contact with receptors on the tongue. Hence, you need a clear tongue to receive this healthy information.”

This weird, yet amazingly effective ritual should be performed daily and will help “stimulate the internal organs through energetic connections with the rest of the body, improve digestion by increasing your sense of taste, and cleanse the body by removing Ama and bacteria from your oral cavity. “

While standing in front of the mirror, I take the scraper, apply slight pressure to my tongue in the back and scrape to the front. I rinse it with water after every pass over my tongue. I repeat this about 4-5 times and I feel peachy clean!

I tried using a toothbrush, but it does not remove the crap from my tongue. I tried using a softer, rubber tongue scraper, but it also did not do anything and I had to press really hard to remove anything, which made me gag even more! A hard, plastic material worked best for me, but some also suggest to use a stainless steel scraper for a deeper mind, body and spirit balance.

Get better health and improve your system! It only costs a couple bucks to try. Experiment today and let me know how it goes below or with an email.
